Chartered accountants can now advertise

Here is something ground breaking about my profession that I am forced to blog upon…A member of the institute of chartered accountants of India can advertise his professional services and he would not be held guilty of misconduct. This would open wide avenues in the line of individual marketing and advertising strategies.

Just imagine your Tax consultant who has a logo which says “we make tax less taxing” or something like that. Pretty impressive. The council’s decision is going to go a long way in making CAs improve their marketing skills. Although certain purists might raise objections as to the ethics of the decision, I would think that in this age of consumerism, nothing can survive unless they are protected by the customer and this is no exception in the case of Service providers as well.

The train ride

I quote my twitter post which I made in the morning today

Apple really can change lives, I left my car at office and took the train back home, just bcos I couldn’t stop listening to music on my ipod”

It was late at night when I left office, just because I wanted to escape rush hour traffic. The traffic gets terrible in the peak evening hours, especially at places where I enter the city limits. Exponential growth of vehicle population, poor infrastructure support, road construction sites which obstruct traffic all put together make the traffic even worse than it would have been. I was about to get into my car, when I realized I could take the train home. So then, I went over to the nearby station to aboard the suburban transit train. Waited for around 25 minutes for the train to arrive, really empty because it was around 8 and since it is one of the first stations on the path. I made myself comfortable, listening to music sitting near the window..a suburban train...similar to the one I took...

There was nothing I could see outside so I had to satisfy myself with the scenery inside the train. A few others from my office were in train as well (although, I didn’t know any of them…) There was a young boy returning from his college (most probably..) Few men who looked like they worked as accounting clerks in manufacturing companies (no offence…) and few young men who were loiterining around..The trip took around 1 hour as compared to 2 hours if I had driven home…

I got down at my station and walked home, listening to music looking at the lovely dark skies with twinkling stars above me..These are the small moments in life which make it worth living…

When I was sitting in the morning sitting in the hot train with the scorching heat so unbearable..and was sweating profusely…I missed my car so much…

Ground control, we have an emergency: Twitter is down

Twitter is down from today morning…Out of touch with the tweet world. All I see on my twitter home are the catbot, birds and the broken piece of electrical connection..On the plus side, saves a lot of my time. Twitter is a time waster, no matter how much you try not to think that way. The morning has been really productive in the absence of twitter. Why does twitter go down? Some of the reasons that the twitter folk have given us:

  • Part of our caching service required an unscheduled restart
  • This was a planned maintenance project
  • finished a major infrastructure project tonight
  • some caching issues—namely, the /home timeline cache wasn’t being updated correctly for everyone
  • and many many more…

All of the above are from Twitter’s official blog..But the fact is easy to understands, the network infrastructure is too weak to support the kind of volume which twitter handles. I read somewhere that twitter’s staff are not enough to support the network, which could be true as I note and quote from one of their official blogs

“I just left the office, at 6am, with most of our engineering and technical operations team. That’s only a handful of people, but we were all there all night”

All said and done, I wish twitter would get its already upgraded infrastructure upgraded enough to handle the traffic or atleast give us prior information on scheduled outages and estimated downtimes (not that they have to be accurate). But, there is one thing which I read somewhere, “We need twitter more than it needs us.”

Awww…twitter is still down, ground control: “may”day…

Update June 25, 2008

Twitter now has whales instead of the bird and the broken robot. And here is a workaround which twitter has brought in to reduce load.

I cannot click on replies.

twitter is stressed out a little bit now..so replies is disabled.

Now, thats stress management at twitter. But, since we have the site status available on the twitter blog, I know that twitter is down. But, I would like twitter to do something about it, rather than telling me that the site is down…I  also note that now API requests have been limited to 20 per hour.

Iron Man

I just couldn’t resist myself from writing a review for this movie. I could in fact sum up the whole review in just one line. “Why are you wasting time reading this review…Go and watch the movie….”

I decided to watch Iron Man after I read an article about how the movie had grossed more than Speed Racer…Now if SR was good, then this had to be excellent…and I wasn’t disappointed one bit..Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark is a natural for the role as he plays it with ease…He shows the suffering and the pain he goes through at the hands of terrorists and then again at the hands of his business partner…(Oh! God, too many spoilers, thats why I did not want you to waste your time reading this review…) The technology is realistic and the CG are added in the correct quantity…Not too much, not too less…I cannot but help drawing comparisons between Tony and Bruce Wayne…which makes me want to watch Dark Knight ASAP….

For Gwyneth, her role is a walk in the park and she does complete justice to her role…The action scenes are well shot and look great and slick…

I would like to sum up by saying that, out of the many superhero movies, this is one of those movies with a

heart…not just special effects…

Go speed Racer go…

Go speed racer go...

From the creators of matrix trilogy, comes another movie…Speed racer. I decided to watch the movie, since I could not get tickets for anything else; plus the trailers weren’t too bad. But watching the movie, I was just blown away..The eye candy was great…the shots were superb..some places they went really overboard, but then what do you expect from a movie which talks about cars driving at around 800 mph? The plot is simple.  The races are fixed by a cartel of multinational capitalists who don’t care about the sport. Speed racer is out to stop them..

I realized during the course of the movie that the reason wachowski movies are so cool is because they try to convert japanese anime into cinema with real life actors. The action in the Matrix was inspired by “Ghost in the shell” (which happens to be one of my favourite manga series) In the same way, speed racer comes from an anime of the same name. Japanese cartoons a.k.a manga or anime is one of my favourite genre of tv shows..its no surprise that I loved watching the movie.

Since the movie is an anime adaptation, there is should ideally be no surprise value in the movie; after all you know that the hero will succeed. But, the exaggerated graphics, cool effects and the neck breaking speed keep you at the edge of the seat..since you wait with bated breath for the way the hero wins…unrealistically of course ;) Forget logic, have fun…

The Dark Knight

For the Dark Knight Review. Go Here

the dark knight poster

The plot for the Dark knight movie on IMDb goes like this

“Right after taking out Ra’s Al Ghul’s plan and the mysterious disappearance of Dr. Jonathan Crane AKA Scarecrow, Batman continues his seemingly-endless effort to bring justice to Gotham’s crime and corrupt with the help of Lt. James Gordon and new appointed District Attorney Harvey Dent. But this time, The Dark Knight faces a rising psychopathic criminal called The Joker, who’s eerie grin makes him more dangerous than what he has yet to unleash. It becomes an agenda to both enemies that only one of them remains and are willing to break every part of what they believe in to stop the other.”

Now that sounds interesting..Batman is one super hero I have been a fan of ever since I was a kid. I watched my first batman movie when I was 8 and I have watched every single batman movie ever since. I grew up admiring Bruce wayne and batman. The very fact that Batman was the only superhero who did not have any super human powers appealed to me all the more. Plus we’ve got two face this time around…what more can a batman fan ask for…

The sinister and eerie look of Gotham city (loosely based on NY) and the dark villians who always had a personality of their own, had a dark sad story behind them made the plot only more and more intriguing..I am really sure this is one movie any batman fan should not miss…especially when it features the Joker…Dont miss the trailer below, You should just check out the honors the video has got the very day it has been uploaded…

The fantasy browser wars

I have been a fearless warrior in the browser wars ever since 2000…and I have seen the nations rise and fall, so I thought I would write a blog on that…
Long long ago, in the kingdom of Windowsia, two young warriors set out to dominate the land…One of them was IE, the son of Lord Gatez, the emperor of Windowsia and the other was from the rival kingdom, equally talented..the Netscape…
The young warriors were continually at war…and neither side could be judged the winner…
Until one day, the dragon lord mozilla laid his eyes on Netscape and took over his kingdom…with no netscape to bother, IE grew strong and powerful..but the peace was not to last, because mozilla was not at rest all this while and he empowered his new found netscape with super powers to fight IE..But alas, the power given to netscape was too much for him to handle and all the heavy artillery was too much for him to even load, making him a bloated monster unable to win…IE won the battle once again…
The battle might have been won, but now Mozilla understood where he went wrong..and while he continued to support netscape with more power and troops, he secretly built his own version of netscape deep within his lair, breathing life into it with his own fire and the intelligence and strength which he derived from netscape and thus was born the firebird…but impressed by its cleverness and shrewdness, mozilla decided to rechristen it firefox instead…When firefox came out into the open, with its glistening armor, glowing aura and all the power and skill which mozilla had put into it; it was quite a force to reckon with even when it was young.. IE had to suffer many setbacks, legal difficulties which weakened it all the more…
Firefox grew strong as time passed by…it inspired others to become its followers and a “flock” of men were at its side, and it was near invincible..All this time, there was lurking a powerful lord who was powerful in his own right…who was content with his share of the land, lord opera…but then…
To be contd..

Twitter – the microblogging giant

I thought of writing this post when I started noticing that many of Twitter users were technological geeks whereas the tech challenged were satisfied with their myspace and facebook profiles. Twitter for me paved way to microblogging. Allows you to blog even when you are short of time, in short bursts of under 141 characters…

Updates could be posted to twitter through gtalk IM, mobile phone and many other tools such as twitterfox, twhirl etc..What exactly do people update on twitter..Just anything, anything you feel like..Its a way to rant into the web..to show your joy, to reveal yourself to the web..or simply just update a new website you have come across, your new blog post, the evening movie you are going to watch, any upcoming event you plan to visit…And all this is shared with your followers (friends)

I decide to write this blog for all those people whom I invited to twitter who wanted to know what twitter was all about…
