No more Firefox

chrome vs firefox

The browser boots up, and gives me a list of all those addons which need updates. Of course I’d like to have the latest version. Isn’t it why I had it installed there in the first place? If its my unlucky day, even Firefox would need an update. And there is nothing I can do except wait until all those messy updates are done. Wait, there’s more..After the updates comes the installation. Its very frustrating I need to use a browser quickly for 2 minutes and I need to wait for 5 minutes until Firefox is done dressing up itself. And I almost forgot, update the browser and be assured that atleast 3 out of 5 extensions wouldn’t be compatible. Very, very frustrating.
Chrome updates in the background. I don’t care what you download as long as its from a trusted vendor. 5 seconds and its ready to browse the web, anytime of the day. Installing extensions or themes is just instantaneous with chrome, no restart required.
Because at the end of the day, all I want is to have is to browse the internet. Not just keep looking at progress screens of addons getting updated. Now that Chrome has all extensions I use on Firefox, its been days since I’ve clicked on the Firefox browser. I’ve still not decided to uninstall Firefox, but then I’m getting there.

P.S. When I opened WordPress to write down this post, I was informed that WordPress needed to update to 2.9.1. Here I go again…

Make your firefox look like Firefox 4

The latest news doing its rounds on the internet is the futuristic looking, theme mockups of the Mozilla Firefox 4 browser. The new theme reminds me of the minimalistic feel adopted by both Chrome and IE8. The wiki states the mock ups are only for brainstorming and might be revised several times before they make it to real browser arena..

But, the interface looks really minimalistic and I loved it so much that I went around searching for a download. And here it is, in all its glory. Download the file, extract, click and drag the *.jar file to your Mozilla addons window.

Thanks to “BoneyardBrew“  and “SoapyHamHocks” @ DeviantART for the awesome theme. Do check out more of his work at his DeviantART gallery!
You would also need to install the Firefox Personal menu extension to complete the look.

Firefox 3.5 is out. Time for an upgrade!

The latest version of your Firefox is now out! I’ve been using firefox ever since it was pheonix and I never had complaints. So I guess I wouldn’t come up with any right now!
Firefox 3.5 makes browsing faster. And adds a lot of minor/major functionality tweaks. Makes the awesome bar, even more awesome, and Introduces private browsing at last. But you could wait until all your extensions get upgraded. But most developers have already updated their extensions and you shouldn’t be surprised if most of your popular extensions would move up the upgrade ladder without much trouble.
Site rendering &performance has improved a lot. Read all about their performance upgrades here!

13 reasons why Internet explorer rules workplaces!

A recent survey reveals that most enterprises still love to flaunt Internet Explorer as their default browser. Most of the security updates in the organization are for IE as well. Major reasons which could be attributed to this are:

  1. It is bundled with Microsoft windows.
  2. Most Microsoft office applications work better with IE
  3. Outlook Webaccess works better with Internet explorer
  4. Microsoft sharepoint services work with Internet explorer
  5. Its easier to put in admin policies for a non-open source browser
  6. Other software used in the organization are dependent on Internet explorer
  7. It gets updated with the windows updater
  8. Its “Microsoft” Internet Explorer.
  9. The admin does not know about Firefox or Chrome
  10. There is so much you can do with Internet explorer
  11. There are no Macs which run Safari or Firefox
  12. Users have trouble learning to use any browser other than IE
  13. The IT policy says so.

Let us know what you think in the comments..Should IE be the browser of choice in organizations?

StumbleUpon – Without the toolbar!

I remember using this one long back, so I decided to write a post about it…This one is for all of you who use browsers like Google Chrome, Flock and are unable to install the stumbleupon toolbar.

A quick introduction, Stumbleupon is the remote control for the web, websites are voted and reviewed upon by users and lets users stumble upon webpages on the internet…based on your interests, search criteria, keywords etc..

Now, Stumbleupon runs courtesy the Stumbleupon toolbar and if you a browser which is unsupported or you just do not wish to install the toolbar, there is no way you can stumbleupon sites…unless of course you enable the Stumbleupon bar which you can enable by dragging the following link to your bookmarks toolbar or clicking on the following link.

Stumbleupon

The Stumbleupon bar frame lets you stumbleupon on new and exciting sites, just the way it would have done if you had installed the toolbar. But, things aren’t so rosy…hmmm, the bar doesn’t let you login with your SU username and you can’t share your favourites with your friends…but you can send something you like to your email address..And since there is no login, the pages may not be from the topics of your interest…

This bar also works great when you are at a PC on which you can’t install software on and you are bored with no work… (if you liked this post, link to it and help promote SU on unsupported browsers)

Multiple instances of Google talk and Firefox

Firefox and Google talk are two apps which I cannot really manage without…but then what do you do if you share your PC with someone else? Maybe someone else at home. Each of us have our own collection of bookmarks, addons and of course logins.

So you would need to get Firefox and Gtalk to run multiple instances. The secret to running them is to use Firefox’s in built profile manager. We need to invoke the profile manager by changing the shortcut path on your desktop. Ideally, the target looks like this “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe”

Change it to

“C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” -profilemanager.

Run the shortcut and you will come across the profile manager.

Firefox profile manager

Click on create new to start the new profile wizard.

add new profile firefox wizard

add new profile firefox wizard

But, even now, there firefox would not let you run two profiles at the same time. Which means if you open another firefox instance when one is running, it will still belong to the same profile. Now to work around that, we need to change the path to

“C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe”  -no-remote -profilemanager

Run the shortcut and you will come across the profile manager even if you have one firefox instance running already. Great now you can login two people can login to two gmail accounts at the same time…

Now, Gtalk is not as customizable as Firefox is, but still they manage to give us two workarounds to run multiple instances.

1. Download Google talk. Run it as instance no.1. Download Gtalk labs edition, run it as instance no. 2

2. I do not recommend gtalk labs edition as it is still in limited beta and has quite a few shortcomings compared to the regular gtalk app. So we lets get to playing around with the shortcut target for google talk as well, considering you had a default install of gtalk, the shortcut target should be “C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe”. And yes, its a bit different if you run Vista.  Lets change the shortcut to

“C:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex

Gtalks! galore, run as many as you want….

Mozilla Weave 0.2

Are you using Firefox? I presume you are. If not, discontinue reading this post. This post is for all those firefox worshippers out there, who have multiple Firefoxes running around the web. A sneak preview at the latest from the secret labs of Mozilla. We have our history, our preferences, our bookmarks, history, passwords and everything on one PC and then try to replicate the bookmarks again on our firefox on another PC. What do we do about the history. Imagine browsing last nite from home and then coming home and searching for that website you browsed the previous night. Here is your solution. Mozilla’s offical labs product, WEAVE.
Mozilla Weave logo
Install WEAVE like you would install any other extension for firefox. I installed both at home and work. Then create a user ID, password and a passphrase(this encrypts your data..when it is backed up on the servers). Do the initial sync. Go to your second PC and login using the ID, password and the passphrase. Then, sync. Voila! you have all your bookmarks. It simply super cool, considering the project is still in advanced stages of beta. So, your data could be lost. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! I took it because it was worth reconstructing to try out the project.

I did run into a few issues trying to work on the sync. It repeatedly refused to sync and the error log said failed to acquire a lock. Now, the solution to that would be to go to Weave preferences -> Advanced -> Debugging tools -> Advanced -> Reset Server lock. Another issue I faced that it took me several tries to login to the help forum for Weave. But once it syncs, its miraculous. I happened to have both the PCs open at the same time and my PC2 actually asked me whether I wanted to open the webpages which were open on PC1.  Weave also plans to come up with more and more user interactivity with the webpages in its future releases.

Now I wouldn’t advise installing Weave if you are paranoid about losing your bookmarks, history and stuff. Otherwise, try it out. Available here.

Weave is the Mozilla labs prototype for online services – this is what the addon installation description says.

Firefox 3 reviewed

The release of thunderror.com coincides with the download day of firefox 3, the browser. So I decided that the first blog should be a review of this site. Mozilla has used clever marketing in packaging the downloads into a guiness world record. So, I decided to do my bit for the most downloads for a single software by downloading firefox 3 (7.15 MB windows installer) and installed it on my microsoft windows xp pc with an AMD athlon dual core processor running at 2.41 Ghz and 1GB of RAM. Decent specs for a browser test I presume.

I had already beta tested Firefox RC1 (release candidate 1) and found that there wasn’t much which has been changed. Firefox 3 of course being the final release is more polished and complete version of the earlier beta releases.

The major changes from its earlier versions (v3 betas excluded) would be the auto suggest address bar. The redesigned navigation buttons, new advanced phishing and malware protection, site identification features which lets you identify whether the site you trust is trustworthy…Improved(tiny tweaks actually) download & bookmark manager. There is even a shortcut to your most visited websites on your bookmarks toolbar.

Though I did not find anything radically different, still its a step in the evolution of a browser already so mature that it can handle anything that you throw at it. I have heard stories of firefox 3 crashing..but till date I haven’t come across that problem with any of firefox’s releases (and I started using firefox when it was called firebird) The auto suggest address bar is both a helpful as well as an irritating feature at times and if you do not like it. I suggest that you use this addon to remove it. The site identification and phishing features are good by being secure without being too intrusive when browsing. The password manager now popups on top of the website asking whether you wish to remember the name of the website without being too intrusive (again, this was a feature already available on flock) The download manager shows its status on the status bar, a very nifty feature. There are lot of other minor tweaks here and there as well which make browsing all the more comfortable. Site rendering and performance too has improved quite a lot…

On the whole, even though firefox 3 is not a giant step for browsers, It still is a step in the right direction and I surely would recommend firefox 3 to anybody out there on the web. Get your copy here.

The fantasy browser wars

I have been a fearless warrior in the browser wars ever since 2000…and I have seen the nations rise and fall, so I thought I would write a blog on that…
Long long ago, in the kingdom of Windowsia, two young warriors set out to dominate the land…One of them was IE, the son of Lord Gatez, the emperor of Windowsia and the other was from the rival kingdom, equally talented..the Netscape…
The young warriors were continually at war…and neither side could be judged the winner…
Until one day, the dragon lord mozilla laid his eyes on Netscape and took over his kingdom…with no netscape to bother, IE grew strong and powerful..but the peace was not to last, because mozilla was not at rest all this while and he empowered his new found netscape with super powers to fight IE..But alas, the power given to netscape was too much for him to handle and all the heavy artillery was too much for him to even load, making him a bloated monster unable to win…IE won the battle once again…
The battle might have been won, but now Mozilla understood where he went wrong..and while he continued to support netscape with more power and troops, he secretly built his own version of netscape deep within his lair, breathing life into it with his own fire and the intelligence and strength which he derived from netscape and thus was born the firebird…but impressed by its cleverness and shrewdness, mozilla decided to rechristen it firefox instead…When firefox came out into the open, with its glistening armor, glowing aura and all the power and skill which mozilla had put into it; it was quite a force to reckon with even when it was young.. IE had to suffer many setbacks, legal difficulties which weakened it all the more…
Firefox grew strong as time passed by…it inspired others to become its followers and a “flock” of men were at its side, and it was near invincible..All this time, there was lurking a powerful lord who was powerful in his own right…who was content with his share of the land, lord opera…but then…
To be contd..
